Thanks to the generous support of Grimsby Canadian Tire and Beamsville Home Hardware, more than 60 Canadian flags have been proudly installed throughout Downtown Grimsby and Downtown Bench Beamsville as part of the new Canadian Flag Program. This cross-community initiative, launched in late spring 2025, and installed last week, brings a vibrant display of national pride just in time for Canada Day on July 1st. The flags will remain on display through Remembrance Day, and the program is set to return annually to enhance the charm of each downtown.

Developed through a partnership between the two Business Improvement Areas, the program is part of ongoing beautification efforts aimed at fostering local pride and creating welcoming streetscapes for residents and visitors alike.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with our neighbours in Downtown Bench Beamsville to bring this display of Canadian pride to two Niagara communities,” said Simon Duong, Chair of Downtown Grimsby. “This initiative is our way of giving back to local businesses and adding something special for the whole community to enjoy.”

This initiative would not have been possible without the generosity and support of our local sponsors. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Grimsby Canadian Tire (44 Livingston Ave, Grimsby) and Beamsville Home Hardware (4992 King St, Beamsville).

"The installation of Canadian flags throughout our downtown is a powerful symbol of unity and pride,” said Jillian D’Archi, Downtown Bench Beamsville BIA Chair. “This project not only celebrates our shared national identity but also reflects the strong spirit of collaboration within our community. By partnering with our neighbours in Grimsby, we’ve created a vibrant and patriotic streetscape that honours our heritage and brings us together in a meaningful way."

Located less than 15 minutes apart, Downtown Grimsby and Downtown Bench Beamsville make the perfect pair for a day trip. We invite residents, visitors, and local businesses to celebrate this shared display of unity and pride as we approach Canada Day and beyond. While you're exploring both downtowns, take time to visit local shops, support small businesses, and choose Canadian-made products.

Also, be sure to share your patriotic moments on social media by tagging @GrimsbyDowntown and @downtownbenchbeamsville, while using hashtags #NiagaraProud, #DowntownGrimsby, #downtownbench, #Beamsville, #Bdowntown and #CanadianPride to be featured on our pages!

Businesses located within either BIA are encouraged to participate in future years of the Canadian Flag Program. If you're interested in supporting or displaying a flag at your storefront, please get in touch with your local Business Improvement Area (BIA) to learn more about how to get involved in 2026 and beyond.

A Business Improvement Area (BIA) is a local association of commercial property owners and tenants who work together to improve, promote, and revitalize a defined commercial district. BIAs enhance the local economy through beautification projects, special events, marketing initiatives, and advocacy—making Main Street areas more vibrant places to live, work, and visit. Both Downtown Grimsby and Downtown Bench Beamsville operate as BIAs, supporting their local business communities and creating engaging public spaces for all.

Downtown Grimsby is bringing back GrimsBOO! for a third year on Saturday, October 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Presented by Civiconnect, the free, family-friendly event will feature trick-or-treating, Halloween activities, photo opportunities and plenty of spooky surprises throughout downtown.

“We’ve been loving the community response to GrimsBOO! over the past couple of years, so we really can’t wait to bring it back,” said Mark Wood, Chair of Downtown Grimsby. “It’s a fun day for all ages so be sure to get out there.”

This year’s event will bring back some favourite activities from previous years while adding new ways to get into the Halloween spirit. With activities happening at various locations, there will be plenty to see and do all throughout downtown.

Trick-or-treating will be at the centre of GrimsBOO!, with dozens of Downtown Grimsby businesses handing out treats. Each participating location will display an official GrimsBOO! Halloween window sign, making it easy for families to spot where they can stop for treats.

Stop by the alleyway behind The Dutch Shop to carve your own jack-o’-lantern. Pick out your perfect pumpkin (we’ll have plenty!) and get carving.

The alleyway behind Harmony Jewellers will become an activity hub with a bouncy castle and games. Kids can jump, play, and have some fun between trick-or-treating stops.

Add a little extra Halloween magic to your costume with face painting, located in the alleyway behind Harmony Jewellers. Choose a spooky design, a favourite character or let the face painter get creative!

Halloween Colouring at Participating Restaurants

Grab a bite while you’re downtown and keep the Halloween fun going with themed colouring pages available for children at participating restaurants.

Strike a pose in your Halloween best! Village Studio, located at 63 Main St W, will be offering free professional digital Halloween photos for attendees.

Four-legged friends can join in the Halloween fun too! The Dog Spot, located at 43 Main St E, will host its own Dog Costume Contest. Pet owners can stop by with their costumed dogs for a chance to win.

Warm up with a selection of hot seasonal beverages from The Market Place on Main, available for purchase at the drink tent in the alleyway behind Harmony Jewellers.

Halloween Installations & Photo Opportunities

Keep an eye out for Halloween-themed installations and photo opportunities throughout downtown. From spooky setups to fun seasonal displays, there will be plenty of spots to snap a Halloween photo.

With treats to collect, pumpkins to carve, costumes to show off and plenty of Halloween fun along the way, GrimsBOO! is the perfect way to spend a spooky Saturday in Downtown Grimsby.

A big thank you to our presenting sponsor, Civiconnect, and our community sponsors, M&M Food Market and The Dog Spot, for helping make GrimsBOO! possible.

Meet The Merchant

How Did You Get Started & What Inspired You to Open a Shop in Downtown Grimsby?

"The Vision Clinic was family-owned and operated right from the get go. They took a look at the town of Grimsby and they fell in love with it. They lived locally, and they decided this is a beautiful place to put down roots and open up and to serve a community that was and still is growing almost 30 years later."

Is there a story behind your business name or logo?

"We chose The Vision Clinic because it's not just an eyeglass clinic or a contact lens clinic or a sunglass clinic, it's all things to do with vision. It has to do with the health of your eye. People think of vision and they think of eyeglasses and fashion... more of, I guess an accessory. But in reality, they're medical devices and your vision is a huge aspect of your overall health."

What's one product or service you're especially proud of?

"I think the 2-for-1 promotion that we run is probably my favourite thing because you pay full price for one pair of glasses and then you get a second at no charge. Most people will end up going with a prescription sunglass which I think is so important. We wouldn't go outside in today's society without SPF on our skin but we forget to put it over our eyes all the time and I think the 2-for-1 promotion is a great opportunity for people to get some UV protection for their eyes."

Tell me about the selection of eye-ware and services you offer!

"We have a big selection of both prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as well as prescription eye-ware in the store. You can buy them off the shelf or we can customize them for you with your prescription. We also do contact lens fittings as well. We have a wide range of more feminine style frames and we have every designer brand that you could possibly think of. We have a pretty good selection of children's frames, everything from super bendy flexible frames to more cute and designer-y frames. We've got a great selection for kind of bigger bolder, more masculine styles too, everything from really sporty, something like with Nike over to something a little more high end like Tom Ford."

What's one thing people might not know about your business?

"We offer full eye exams here. We have an amazing optometrist that comes and joins us on site. His name's Dr. Theodore Hu. He is great with people. He spends his time and effort and energy not only performing the exam but explaining it to people as well. And we offer those eye exams for people of all ages."

What do you love most about what you do?

"I love connecting with people and I think that all of the staff at The Vision Clinic in Grimsby would say the same thing. We like to see people everyday and meet new people and see our friends that have come to see us year after year. I think that's probably the best part about being in the Grimsby community is there's so many amazing people that we get to see day in and day out."

Meet Carolyn Bott from The Vision Clinic, where they offer a full suite of optical services and affordable eyewear for all ages.

Meet the Merchant: Carolyn Bott from The Vision Clinic

has been here for 57 years. I haven't been here quite that long but when we moved to Grimsby I was about 10 or so. It quickly became one of our favourite stores and then I got to know the previous owner and through the course of my career, I always used to joke that if he ever wanted to retire I would buy the place and then one day it wasn't a joke."

"The logo is actually kind of interesting. So it's a tulip which obviously represents the Dutch as we're famous for tulips but it's also a D and an S which represents the name Dutch Shop"

"I mean I'm proud of all of our products but a service that I'm proud of is we do a weekly delivery run to the local seniors home. This is something that we started during Covid when a lot of people couldn't come out and it's something that we've kept doing because there's a lot of Dutch folks and just folks in general over there that have mobility issues and can't make it out. So we are committed to continuing to support them by delivering their groceries to them every week."

What does the Grimsby community mean to you?

"So the Grimsby community to me means home. I've lived in Grimsby most of my life. I've lived in other places - Toronto, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls - but I came back here and I took over a business here cause this is my home and I think it's an amazing community and it's an amazing place to live."

"There's a lot. We've been here for 60 years and we still get people coming in and are surprised that we have a deli. One thing that most people don't know about our business is that we actually do a lot of online and we have shipped our goods here to every province and territory and over 40 US states including Hawaii."

"My favourite part of this job is that no two days are ever the same. And I get the chance to share my heritage, my community, to build a community, meet interesting people, talk about products. But yeah, everyday comes with its challenges and it's always a little bit fun."

What was your first job ever and how did it lead you to your business today?

"My first real job was actually in package design and marketing and that ended up leading pretty directly to what I do now where I modernized a lot of our website and our digital marketing"

You can find The Dutch Shop at 52 Main St. W, Grimsby
